Karen Tearnan

Contemporary South African Artist 

Biography 

Karen Tearnan (b.1968) is a contemporary South African artist, living in Johannesburg. She completed a National Diploma in Fine Arts graduating in 1988, with distinction, and winning the Radmore and Ashley, Windsor and Newton best painter award in 1987. In 2014, some twenty six years after graduating, Karen returned to study further, completing her Honours degree in Visual Arts at The University of Johannesburg. 

During the years in between studying, Karen gained creative experience in the textile, ceramic and graphic design industries, prior to opening her own art studio in 1996. During these intensive years of building a business, and undertaking numerous commissions in both South Africa and abroad, Karen has honed her personal style and oeuvre. 

Karen has created commissioned artworks for President Jose dos Santos of Angola, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation in South Africa, Nelspruit Municipality, and her work is featured at the exclusive Saxon Hotel in Johannesburg. She has also been commissioned and completed a number of public artworks for public buildings in the new CBD in Gaborone, Botswana.

Since completing her Honours degree, Karen has participated in the following exhibitions:
